The Power of Customer Service in Building a Strong Business

Exceptional customer service isn’t just about solving problems. It’s about creating experiences people remember.

That was the focus of the July RISE Grapevine Virtual Meetup, where entrepreneurs and business support organizations from across Southern Virginia gathered to explore how small actions create loyal customers, stronger relationships, and long-term business success. Hosted by the SOVA Innovation Hub and Longwood SBDC, the monthly Grapevine brings together entrepreneurs to learn from experts, share ideas, and strengthen Southern Virginia’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

This month’s featured speaker was Dr. Vince Magnini, Chair of the Department of Management and Marketing at Longwood University and Business Consultant with the Longwood SBDC. Drawing on years of research and experience in customer service and hospitality, Dr. Magnini shared practical strategies that entrepreneurs in every industry can begin using immediately.

Small Moments Leave Lasting Impressions

As always, the meeting opened with introductions and an icebreaker.

Participants were asked:

“What is one small thing a business has done that made you feel genuinely valued as a customer?”

The answers were simple but meaningful.

One participant appreciated a local coffee shop that remembered both her name and her regular order. Another shared how a car dealership handled an unexpected mechanical issue without hesitation, turning a frustrating experience into a positive one. Others mentioned businesses that followed up after a service call, remembered personal details about their families, or simply took time to listen.

The conversation set the tone for the session. Customer loyalty is often built through small, thoughtful actions rather than grand gestures.

Four Ways to Create Better Customer Experiences

Dr. Magnini presented four practical ideas that entrepreneurs can use to strengthen customer relationships.

Deliver Positive Surprises

Today’s customers face constant distractions and information overload. To truly capture someone’s attention, businesses need to create unexpected moments that leave a positive impression.

These surprises do not have to cost money. A handwritten note, remembering a customer’s preferences, celebrating a milestone, or offering an unexpected act of kindness can all become memorable experiences that customers share with others.

Turn Problems into Opportunities

No business is perfect.

Whether it’s a shipping delay, bad weather, or another issue outside your control, customers remember how you respond when something goes wrong.

Dr. Magnini discussed the idea of the “recovery paradox,” the concept that an excellent recovery after a problem can actually leave customers more satisfied than if nothing had gone wrong in the first place. By responding quickly, showing empathy, and offering practical solutions, businesses can strengthen trust instead of losing it.

Create a Shared Vision

Outstanding customer service does not happen by accident.

Employees are more motivated to serve customers well when they understand the larger purpose behind their work. Rather than simply completing tasks, successful teams understand how their individual roles contribute to helping customers and advancing the mission of the business.

Creating that shared vision helps build a culture where excellent service becomes everyone’s responsibility.

Build Systems that Support Great Service

Consistency matters.

Even the most dedicated employees struggle if business systems make it difficult to serve customers effectively.

From organizing workflows to improving communication and documenting customer preferences, strong systems make it easier to deliver great experiences every time, not just when the business owner is present.

Entrepreneurs Shared Their Own Customer Service Lessons

Following the presentation, participants discussed how these principles apply to their own businesses.

Several entrepreneurs shared that learning customers’ names, remembering birthdays or important milestones, asking about hobbies, and making thoughtful referrals all help create stronger relationships. Others emphasized that not every customer is the right fit. Helping someone find another resource can still create goodwill, strengthen partnerships, and build a stronger entrepreneurial ecosystem.

One participant shared that simply asking customers about their hobbies or interests often leads to genuine conversations and stronger relationships. Another explained that keeping notes in a customer management system, such as birthdays or special milestones, helps ensure every team member can provide a personal experience. Others discussed the importance of understanding a customer’s desired outcome before trying to solve a problem, allowing businesses to set expectations while still providing excellent service.

The discussion reinforced one of the biggest themes of the meeting.

Customer service is not about following a script. It is about genuinely caring for the people you serve.

RISE in partnership with the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC) and community sponsors, hosted the RISE Impact Halifax Startup Experience on June 23–25, 2026, at SVHEC in South Boston.

The three-day summer program welcomed rising 7th through 12th grade students from Halifax County Middle School, Halifax County High School, and homeschool communities in Halifax and Charlotte counties for an engaging entrepreneurship experience centered on innovation, leadership, and problem-solving.

Throughout the program, students explored key entrepreneurial concepts, including identifying opportunities, thinking creatively, solving problems, understanding customer needs, developing innovative ideas, and learning how entrepreneurs create value within their communities. Working in collaborative teams, participants applied these concepts through interactive challenges and activities designed to strengthen essential workplace and life skills.

Students also developed competencies in critical thinking, design thinking, collaboration, communication, creative thinking, and responsible citizenship while tackling real-world challenges and presenting their ideas with confidence.

“The Impact Halifax Startup Experience encourages students to think beyond the classroom by introducing them to entrepreneurship as a way to solve problems, create opportunities, and make a positive impact in their communities,” said Jocelyn Forest, Entrepreneurship Education Coordinator for the RISE Collaborative. “By combining entrepreneurial concepts with hands-on learning, students build confidence and develop skills that will benefit them throughout their education, careers, and lives.”

The Impact Halifax Startup Experience is part of RISE’s ongoing commitment to preparing Southern Virginia’s youth for the future by cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset, fostering innovation, and developing the leadership skills needed to thrive in an ever-changing economy.

RISE and RAMP Launch Program to Help Agricultural, Forestry, and Rural Innovators Reach the Marketplace

New RAMP Up accelerator program will help innovators turn ideas into products, businesses, and real-world solutions

SOUTH BOSTON, VA – July 9, 2026 – RISE (Regional Investment in Startups and Entrepreneurs) and RAMP (Regional Accelerator and Mentoring Program) today announced RAMP Up, a new commercialization accelerator program for agricultural, forestry, and rural innovators in Southern Virginia. The program is funded by the Virginia Tobacco Region Revitalization Commission and VIPC (Virginia Innovation Partnership Corporation), and combines RISE’s regional network, an initiative of the SOVA Innovation Hub, with RAMP’s decade of commercialization experience through the Roanoke Blacksburg Innovation Alliance (RBIA).

The program welcomes startups, existing businesses, researchers, and innovators working in agriculture, forestry, food systems, animal sciences, natural resources, advanced manufacturing, automation, sustainability, rural technology, and related industries.

Over eight weeks, participants will work with experienced entrepreneurs, researchers, and industry experts to validate customer needs, evaluate market opportunities, refine business models, and develop commercialization strategies. There is no cost to participate in RAMP Up.

Each team that successfully completes the program will be eligible for grants up to $10,000 to support commercialization activities such as product development, pilot projects, customer validation, or other approved business growth expenses. These are non-dilutive grants, meaning that the company does not give up any ownership in exchange for this funding.

Graduates will also be connected to additional entrepreneurship and accelerator opportunities through RAMP, RISE, and other regional partners based on their stage of growth.

Program sessions will be hosted on eight consecutive Mondays, 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM, September 21 through November 9, with seven in-person sessions at the SOVA Innovation Hub in South Boston, Virginia and one virtual session.

Applicants must be existing Virginia businesses or committed to establishing business operations in Virginia. To be eligible, businesses must be located in one of the following localities:

  • Cities: Covington, Danville, Emporia, Lynchburg, Martinsville, Radford, Roanoke, and Salem
  • Counties: Alleghany, Amelia, Amherst, Appomattox, Bedford, Botetourt, Brunswick, Buckingham, Campbell, Charlotte, Craig, Cumberland, Dinwiddie, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Greensville, Halifax, Henry, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Montgomery, Nottoway, Patrick, Pittsylvania, Prince Edward, Pulaski, Roanoke, and Sussex.

Businesses located within incorporated towns in these eligible counties are also welcome to apply.

This partnership will help more innovators move from concept to company while strengthening Southern Virginia’s innovation economy.

“Southern Virginia has a long history of innovation rooted in agriculture, forestry, manufacturing, and rural enterprise,” said Lauren Mathena, Director of Economic Development and Community Engagement for the SOVA Innovation Hub and Program Director for RISE. “Through this partnership with RAMP, we are creating new opportunities for innovators to connect with experts, test ideas, and explore pathways to bring new products and solutions to market. We want to help great ideas become businesses, jobs, and economic opportunities for our region.”

“Many innovations never reach the marketplace because innovators lack access to commercialization support,” said Chip Bobbert, Director of Innovation at the Roanoke Blacksburg Innovation Alliance, the entity that operates RAMP. “RAMP Up is designed to bridge that gap by helping innovators understand customers, markets, partnerships, and commercialization pathways before they enter a full accelerator program.”

Financial Literacy for Entrepreneurs, Access to Capital, and Building Business Readiness

At the April RISE Grapevine Virtual Meetup for Entrepreneurs, business owners and ecosystem partners from across Southern Virginia gathered for an important conversation about one of the most common challenges entrepreneurs face: money.

The monthly Grapevine meetup continues to create space for entrepreneurs to learn, connect, and grow together. This month’s featured topic was financial literacy for entrepreneurs, led by DaShanna Carr of the Community Investment Collaborative (CIC).

And if there was one message that stood out, it was this: understanding your numbers matters.

Three Financial Truths Every Entrepreneur Should Know

DaShanna Carr, Loan Officer with CIC, delivered a practical and engaging presentation centered on three key financial truths for entrepreneurs.

Revenue Is Not the Goal. Profit Is.

Many entrepreneurs focus on sales, but revenue alone does not tell the whole story.

A business can generate money and still struggle if expenses are too high. What matters most is what remains after costs are paid.

As DaShanna explained, revenue sounds good, but profit tells the truth.

Know Your Costs

Do you know what it really costs to run your business?

That includes:
Rent or lease payments
Supplies and inventory
Labor
Insurance
Utilities
Bookkeeping
Marketing
Equipment

Without understanding costs, it becomes difficult to price correctly, plan growth, or make smart financial decisions.

Track Your Money

You cannot improve what you are not tracking.

Whether it is a spreadsheet, accounting software, AI tools, or even a notebook, entrepreneurs need a simple system to track:

What is coming in
What is going out
What is left

Deshana encouraged business owners not to overcomplicate it. Start where you are and build consistency.

Lending Is About Readiness, Not Just Need

One of the strongest insights from the session was this:

Lenders do not fund need. They fund readiness.

Many entrepreneurs know they need money to grow, but before funding comes clarity:

  • Are the numbers accurate?
  • Is there a repayment plan?
  • Does the business model make sense?
  • Can the loan strengthen the business rather than create more strain?

This perspective helped reframe lending as preparation, not desperation.

How CIC Supports Entrepreneurs in Southern Virginia

DaShanna also shared how the Community Investment Collaborative works differently than traditional lenders. CIC serves entrepreneurs who may not yet be bank-ready but have viable businesses and growth potential.

CIC Loan Options Include:

  • Microloans from $5,000 to $50,000
  • Up to $100,000 for established businesses
  • Flexible terms and interest rates
  • Relationship-based underwriting
  • Education and coaching support

CIC also offers:

  • Credit counseling
  • Financial management support
  • Entrepreneur workshops
  • Office hours
  • Referrals to additional resources

The message was clear: if you are not ready today, there are still pathways forward.

WHY THIS MATTERS

For many entrepreneurs, financial literacy can feel intimidating. But this session broke it down into clear, actionable truths.

Know your costs.
Track your money.
Focus on profit.
Get ready before you borrow.

Those lessons matter whether someone is launching a side hustle, growing a storefront, or preparing for their next phase of expansion.

Trademark Basics
